On many occasions, I reflect on women in leadership roles, particularly as National Women’s History Month comes to a close.

As one of the first women in industrial sales, I understand how difficult it can be to be a first. Considering how challenging it was, I wondered how tough it must have been for the very first woman to lead the way, and I asked myself who among us was one of the very first. It led me to the Bible, and although the Bible mentions women in leadership roles very little, my curiosity was piqued, and I began further research. My heart was touched by what I found.

The first woman to hold a significant leadership role in the Bible is Deborah. She served as the fourth judge of the Israelites during a time of oppression by the Canaanites. Deborah played a crucial role in leading the Israelites to victory over their enemies. Her story is found in the Book of Judges, chapters 4 and 5, dating between 1200 and 1125 BC.

One of the most striking aspects of Deborah’s leadership is her fearlessness. Despite societal norms and expectations, she stepped into roles typically reserved for men, demonstrating courage and conviction in her abilities. Deborah’s faith in her calling empowered her to lead with unwavering confidence.

How is it relevant to women today?

Deborah’s story holds immense significance for women in modern society. It reminds us of the strength and capabilities inherent in every woman. Her example encourages women to break free from constraints and pursue leadership roles with determination and resilience.

Deborah’s leadership also highlights the importance of mentorship and collaboration. She worked alongside Barak, the military commander, showcasing the effectiveness of partnership and teamwork in achieving shared goals. Women today can benefit from building supportive networks and leveraging collective strengths to overcome challenges.

Deborah inspires many leadership skills, such as COURAGE and boldness in stepping into leadership roles despite barriers. She also possesses WISDOM and discernment, guiding her people with clarity and insight while seeking knowledge and making informed decisions. Her ability to EMPOWER those around her, instilling confidence and support. RESILIENCE empowered her to remain steadfast as she maintained a VISION for her people’s future, inspiring them to strive for a better tomorrow.

The story of Deborah in the Bible offers invaluable insights, serving as a timeless source of inspiration for women leaders today to chart their paths to success and positively impact their business and personal lives.

Is it possible to be like Deborah? Do I have what it takes? The story of Deborah in the Bible reminds us that courage, wisdom, and faith are not reserved for a chosen few—they are qualities we can cultivate within ourselves.
